This resource has been created to help in teaching ‘rounding numbers’ to grade 3 students. It should be used as part of your lesson and could be used in part with homework. This resource could also be used for intervention groups. Useful for ✔ Activity sheets as part of lessons ✔ Homework ✔ Intervention groups for higher graders Whats included •You may have to explain to students what the difference is between a vertical and horizontal line is. Some of the activity sheets state draw a vertical number line. If a horizontal line is drawn then the answer would be incorrect. Explain to students that they will be marked as wrong even if the answer is correct. •There are two posters which are to be used as a reference only. It explains to students the easiest way to round a number in tens, hundreds and could be used for thousands. •There are two vertical line activities – round to the nearest ten. •There are two vertical line activities – Round to the nearest hundred. Each of the two activities has 6 equations to solve. •There are two weight activities sheets – both with 3 weight equations on them. Students must draw a vertical line or the answer will be marked wrong. •There are two parts to the minutes activity sheet. Students must first work out the time its taken and then round to the answer to the nearest ten. Problem chains are a great way to know if your students have fully understood the concept of what has been taught. During Grade 3 your students should have a good understanding of how follow on questions work. Problem chains are an excellent way to test their knowledge and comprehension. What are problem chains? Problem chains are where you have one fact and multiple questions stem from it. In this case they are math related. Each statement has 4 questions and each question is linked to the one previously. How many questions are there? There are 5 sheets with 4 linking questions on each one. To answer these correctly students must be able to; Understand the concept of rounding to the nearest 10 Be able to add 2 and 3 digits Have the vocabulary to be able to explain answers in words Express a good understanding of problem solving skills What Grade is this resource developed for? These place value task cards focus around the 2.NBT.1 CCSS. What is 2.NBT.1? 2.NBT.1 forms part of the CCSS (Common Core State Standard). It was created as an effort led by state to improve the educational outcome of students in Math and English/Language Arts (ELA). What’s included with these place value task cards? 84 task cards with answer key cards. The top left hand corner is numbered with the answer cards matching. The bottom left hand corner has ‘2.NBT.1’. This makes it easier to not mix the task card up. Print and laminate to add durability. Place value task cards 1 to 12 – What number can you make with the following numbers? 13 to 24 – What number do these number blocks make? 25 to 36 – Write these numbers in words. 37 to 48 – Which of these two numbers is the largest number? 49 to 60 – Which of these two numbers is the largest number? 61 to 72 – This number has been written in words. This fraction game is all about getting your alien from the start box to the end box will be challenging. You will face set backs, challenging additions (there is often more than one correct answer), you could be forced to miss a turn and land on spaces which send you back a space or three. There is always the chance you will land on an occupied space and be forced to take a challenge card. This game is not for the faint hearted! Do you dare to take on the challenge? Can you get to the end of the game? This game is suitable from grades 4 to 6. Though those who are more able in grade 3 would find this fun and challenging and this fraction space game makes for an ideal intervention game for higher graders. Whats included and the prep work needed Space Fractions game – Print and laminate for durability. Space Fraction Rules Poster – Print and laminate. Your students can self access. Placing it near your math station or where the game will most likely played. Fraction card – There are 8 fraction cards which you will need to print and cut out. Fraction card covers – You have two options. Option 1 – Black and white or option 2 – Green background with blue writing. There are 8 of each. **Tip – You can print the black and white ones on color paper/card to change the background. ** Once the fraction cards and covers have been printed and cut out, laminate back to back. Challenge cards –There are 8 challenge cards. Print and cut out. Challenge card covers – You have two options. Option 1 – Black and white or option two –Blue background with green writing.
